It's no secret Akon likes to exaggerate. Remember that time he said both Alicia Keys and Beyonce were jocking him for a date? Or how he likes to claim he’s from Sengal when actually he was born in St. Louis, or that time he claimed he was a polygamist and had 3 wives? So it should come as no surprise that he exaggerated about his criminal record to up his street cred. Remember when he first came out, he said he spent 4 1/2 years in prison for running a car theft ring? Never happened. According to The Smoking Gun, despite having been arrested six times, the only conviction Akon has on record is a 1998 gun possession charge, for which he got three years probation. He was also arrested in metro Atlanta for possession of a stolen BMW and spent several months in a DeKalb County jail before all charges were dropped. But that's it.
