Former drug kingpin Nicky Barnes reveals in his book, “Mr. Untouchable,” that he met Melvin at the Gold Lounge. Barnes claims that Melvin sold him some good cocaine and they became friends over time. Barnes adds, ‘the only problem with Melvin, he was never strapped despite being in the drug game.” ‘Personally, I liked Melvin. But he felt nobody he knew would set him up. He thought he was too well liked.
One time I met up with Melvin to shoot the breeze, he brought his baby boy along in a stroller. The kid was named Sean John Combs, later known as Diddy. We smoked and laughed and little Sean cried at the top of his lungs. I told Melvin, ‘your kid has a set of pipes on him.’ Melvin Combs would eventually pay the price for never being strapped. He trusted the guys he did business with and they were snakes. I don’t know why he got killed but it was this one guy who I tried to warn him about.
I told Melvin that dude was a treacherous motherfucker who would stab you in the back. But Melvin didn’t listen. He thought there’d be honor among thieves. Melvin was just too nice.’
